Bunions in Pomona and Tappan, NY

A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the side of the big toe. The most common cause is wearing tight footwear, such as high heels or shoes that shove the toes together. For this reason, bunions are most common in older women, but they can happen to anyone at any age. You can also be predisposed to developing bunions if you have a family history of bunions or arthritis.

Bunions are a prevalent problem, but as they grow they cause more pain and discomfort in your shoes. In extreme cases, the bunion can even cause the big toe to overlap the second toe. If you notice a bunion, do not delay calling your NY podiatrist

Treating Bunions

The first thing your podiatrist will recommend for your bunion is comfortable, supportive footwear with a large toe box. Wear these shoes as often as you can. Depending on the size of your bunion you may have several treatment options. We can treat your bunion with:

  • Medication to treat pain and inflammation in the toe joint.
  • Icing the bunion for 20 minutes at a time to help ease the pain.
  • Padding worn on the bunion or inside the shoes to prevent pain while walking.
  • Orthotic inserts are worn in the shoes or extra support and cushion.
  • Night splints are often recommended for younger patients. They help straighten the toe overnight.
  • Physical therapy exercises to improve foot flexibility and strength, which may reduce discomfort and prevent further misalignment

If these non-invasive treatments do not ease your pain and your bunion has progressed to the point of needing surgery, we specialize in outpatient surgery to remove the bunion and stabilize the toe joint.
