FAQs About Bunion Surgery

Explaining a Bunion

Dr. Barry Schoenberg and Dr. Jeffrey Horowitz of Palisades Podiatry Associates in Pomona, NY, are your leading skilled podiatry doctors for bunion surgery.

A painful bunion causes the great toe to become deformed, and as time passes, the bunion grows. Thus, you may experience increased pain to the point that wearing shoes and comfortably walking on your foot is nearly impossible.

Bunions represent excess bone growth. Therefore, the only option for you is a bunionectomy, a standard surgical procedure to remove this extra bone growth.

FAQs About Bunions

Read on to discover a few common questions our patients ask when suffering from a painful bunion.

Dr. Schoenberg and Dr. Horowitz hope to answer all your questions about bunions and surgery, most commonly asked by their patients.

Q. What causes a bunion to develop?

A. Wearing incorrect shoe sizes.

Q. Are there treatment options other than surgery?

A. Yes. There are a few non-surgical treatments to help relieve your bunion pain. However, your only option for relief may be a bunionectomy.

Q. Are bunions always painful?

A. No. Some patients have no physical pain, but the bunion ruins their shoes and looks unappealing.

Q. Will I be asleep during this foot surgery?

A. Some doctors put you under anesthesia during surgery. Other doctors opt for completely numbing the foot, and you are awake during the surgery. You will be completely comfortable during surgery.

Q. Do I spend time in the hospital?

A. A bunionectomy is an outpatient procedure; you will go home later that day.

Q. What does the surgeon do in this process?

A. Your doctor shaves off the bone growth and realigns your great toe with the rest of your toes.

Q. Can I walk after surgery?

A. Each doctor has a specific set of instructions. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully, so your foot heals successfully.

Q. Do I have to wear a cast?

A. While some doctors cast, others do not apply a cast. You may or may not be able to bear weight on your heel only.
